Sport Club Roundup — November 7, 2017


The WashU tennis club competed in the Badger Classic Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4 in Madison, Wisc. WashU finished as the Silver Bracket champions for the second-consecutive year. The Bears defeated Butler (30-10) and UIC (30-9) in pool play, falling only to eventual Gold Bracket champions Wisconsin A (24-18). WashU took down Colorado (25-19), Wisconsin B (25-24), and Northwestern (24-19) en route to the silver bracket championship. Team members include Jenna Brambora, Luke Foreman, Mackenzie Phillips, Oscar Levine, Kelly Reger, Christina Zhou and Christian Anyanwu.

Women's Ultimate

The WashU women's ultimate club (WUWU) competed in the Missouri Loves Company tournament Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5, in Columbia, MO. WUWU finsihed the tournament in fifth place, ourperforming its No. 12 seed. WUWU defeated Grinnell, Mizzou, Milwaukee, Iowa, Kansas B, Wisconsin, Kansas A and Northwestern while suffering its lone loss to Minnesota. 

Men's Ultimate

The WashU men's ultimate club competed in the Missouri Loves Company tournament Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5, in Columbia, MO. WashU's A squad "Contra" went 2-4 in the tournament while the B squad "Contraband" went 1-6. 


The WashU baseball club split a doubleheader with Bradley on Saturday, Nov. 4, in Peoria, Ill. The Bears suffered an 8-5 loss in the opener before rebounding for an 8-6 win in the nighcap. Jacob Weinstein and Drew McPike each had solid performances on the mound while Arron Kruse led the WashU offense with five hits and 3 RBIs. 


The WashU rowing club wrapped up its fall season at the Head of the Hooch Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5, in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Hooch is the second largest regatta in North America, with 2000 boats representing 200 different organizations, including collegiate, high school, and masters programs.

WashU had a highly successful regatta with the men bringing home bronze in the Collegiate Eight event — the best result in that event for a Wash U men's eight — and a step up from last year's fifth place. The men came in behind Florida in first and UNC in second, and ahead of rivals Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Case and Emory among others. 

The medal-winning crew was: Sam Manyak (coxswain), Jamie Fuhrman, Brooks Becker, Matthew Heiken, Sam Vuchetich, Chase Antonacci, John Braham, Barak Davidi and Ivan Ginsberg.

Men's collegiate novice/freshman eight: 12th out of 29

Men's Basketball

The WashU men's basketball club suffered a 72-64 loss at SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday, Nov. 4.  

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The WashU Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club sent competitiors to the East St. Louis Open on Saturday, Nov. 11. Andrew bright took double gold in the purple belt division while Alex Dutton took gold in the open weight white belt division and Josh Kim took gold in the 15-170 pound white beld division. Also for WashU, Kevin Jordan took silver in the open weight white belt division and Alex Wilcosky took bronze in the blue belt division. 


The WashU equestrian club competed int eh Northern Illinois University IHSA Hunt Seat Show on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 4-5 in Maple Park, Ill. WashU took home 25 individual ribbons over the weekend and finished as Reserve High Point Team on day one of the event while president Maya Sorini qualified for regionals.

Seconds: Emme Weiderhold - Advanced Walk Trot Canter Equitation, Anna Day - Novice Hunt Seat Equitation, Mea Akey - Novice Hunt Seat Equitation.
Thirds: Maddie Booth - Open Hunt Seat Over Fences, Ioana Nistor - Intermediate Hunt Seat Over Fences.


The WashU triathlon club competed in the Gateway Cupcake 5k on Saturday, Nov. 4, in Forest Park. WashU's squad ate 57 cupcakes overall. Caleb Wolters finished as the Race Champion after eating five cupcakes and finishing with an adjusted time of 8:32. Sean Fallon finished second overall with five cupcakes and a time of 8:48 while Eleni Andris came in third in the women's race with three cupcakes and a time of 15:04. Sam Chai (4 cupcakes/12:05), Michael Kramer (5 cupcakes/16:35) and Connie Gan (1 cupcake/24:01) each reached the podium in their respective age groups. 

Women's Volleyball

The WashU women's volleyball club competed in the SLU Fall Billiken Bash on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Saint Louis University. WashU's Red squad won its pool and finished second in the gold bracket while the Green squad finished third in its pool and was eliminated in the opening round of the silver bracket. 

Men's Volleyball

The WashU men's volleyball club competed in the Missouri S&T Shanksgiving Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 4, in Rolla, Mo. The Bears finished second in the tournament behind host Missouri S&T's alumni team.
