Sport Club Roundup — March 8, 2017

Men's Lacrosse

The men's lacrosse club split a pair of road games in Louisiana last weekend. WashU topped Southeastern Louisiana 20-5 on Friday, March 3, in Hammond, La. before falling to Louisiana-Lafayette 14-9 on Saturday, March 4, in Lafayette, La. Jimmy Wyderko tallied 8 goals and 5 assists over the weekend while Hayden von Hoffman picked up 8 goals and 3 assists and Andrew Montgomery added 7 goals and 7 assists. Henry Sippel won 39 of 53 faceoffs for WashU while Jackson Kleeman made 21 saves on the weekend.

Tennis Club

The WashU tennis club repeated as Sectional Champions after going undefeated at the USTA Tennis On Campus Missouri Valley tournament March 4-6 in Des Moines, Iowa. WashU defeated Drake, Kansas State, Northern Iowa, Iowa State and Iowa to take its second-consecutive Sectional crown and advance to nationals, which will be held in April in Orlando. WashU team members included Luke Foreman, Sam Cohen, Jenna Brambora, Mackenzie Phillips, Alex Qin, Alex Gerson, Kelly Reger and Christina Zhou. 

Men's Rugby

The men's rugby club suffered a home loss to Nebraska on Saturday, March 4, at South Campus Field. Sean Lundergan scored a try and Lucas Taub converted a penalty for the Griffins. WashU remains in 5th place in the D1-AA Conference with its season finale against Iowa State coming up in April.

Women's Rugby

The women's rugby club suffered a 22-17 loss to Mizzou on Saturday, March 4, at South Campus Field. Maddy Yaggi scored two tries for WashU while Alice Hsu scored a try and kicked a conversion for the Bears.

Women's Lacrosse

The women's lacrosse club suffered a 9-8 loss to Saint Louis University on Saturday, March 4, at South Campus Field.

Women's Ultimate

The women's ultimate club "WUWU" hosted the Midwest Throwdown Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, in Columbia, Mo. WashU's A squad "Iron Horse" finished the tournament in a tie for 10th while the B squad "Locamotive" finished 35th.

Iron Horse went 1-2 in pool play with an 11-10 over St. Olaf and a pair of losses to Kansas (13-5) and Northwestern (9-8). WashU opened bracket play with a 10-7 loss to Winona State before rebounding with a 9-5 win over Saint louis University. Iron Horse suffered a close 9-8 loss to Carleton College in the ninth-place game.

Locamotive went 0-3 in pool play before opening up bracket play with a 11-10 win over North Park. The B squad suffered a pair of losses to Oklahoma (11-6) and Wisconsin-Eau Claire (7-2) before closing out the tournament with a 15-6 win over Mizzou.

Men's Ultimate

The men's ultimate club competed in the Midwest Throwdown Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, in Columbia, Mo. WashU's A squad "Contra" finished the tournament in third place while the B squad "Contraband" finished 27th.

Contra went 1-2 in pool play with a win over Missouri (15-9) and close losses to Northwestern (13-12) and Iowa State (14-12). WashU rebounded in bracket play with wins over Kansas State (13-7) and St. John's (15-9) before falling to Northwestern 15-7 in the semifinals. Contra rounded out the tournament with a 15-2 win over Kansas in the third-place game.

Contraband also went 1-2 in pool play with a win over Wisconsin Milwaukee B (15-2) and losses to Missouri S&T (15-3) and Truman State (15-5). In bracket play, Contraband defeated Wisconsin C (12-6), lost to Drury (12-9) and topped Nebraska-Omaha (15-2).

Fencing

The fencing club competed in the Join the Pirate Crew tournament on Saturday, March 4, at buccaneer Blades Fencing in Wentzville, Mo. Porter Durham finished first in Foil while Dylan Coe came in second and Aaron Bialer was third. In Epee, Durham finished first and John Lewis came in third. Durham received his E 2017 in both Foil and Epee as a result of his wins.

Men's Volleyball

The men's volleyball club finished 11th in the Midwest Plains Volleyball Conference crossover tournament on Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5, in Edwardsville, Ill. 

Swimming

The swimming club suffered a narrow 52-49 defeat at crosstown rival Saint Louis University on Sunday, March 5.

The figure skating club competed in the Skate On Wisconsin event last weekend in Madison, Wisc. WashU finished ninth out of 18 teams in the event.
