Sport Club Roundup — February 9, 2017


The WashU fencing club competed in the 2017 Landlubbers and Cabin Boys/Girls Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Buccaneer Blades Fencing in Wentzville, Mo. Porter Durham and Dylan Coe took first and second, respectively in senior mixed foil.  


The running team has competed in a few races to kick off the spring season. The Bears competed in the Frostbite 4 Mile/Half Marathon on Saturday, Jan. 28 in St. Louis. Bram Osterhout finished first out of 368 runners the men's half marathon in a time of 1:14:53. Also for WashU, Lexi Slome placed fourth overall and first in her age group in the 4-mile race in a time of 26:25 while Emily Stava placed ninth overall and second in her age group at 26:57. There were 321 runners in the women's 4-mile.

WashU also competed in the Snowball Series Jefferson Barracks 4 Mile on Saturday, Feb. 4 in St. Louis, sweeping the men's and individual titles. Osterhout placed first out of 286 participants in the men's 4-mile race in a time of 22:37 while Slome and Stava went 1-2 among 357 competitors in the women's race with times of 26:20 and 26:27 respectively.

Men's Volleyball

The WashU men's volleyball club hosted the Midwest Plains Volleyball Conference East Regional Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center. The Bears went 2-3 overall and finished third in the tournament. WashU opened the tournament with a 1-1 split in pool play, defeating SIU Edwardsville 25-22, 25-17 abd falling to Missouri A 25-15, 25-19. The Bears lost to eventual tournament champion St. Louis A in a tough three-set crossover match (25-11, 24-26, 15-9) before rebounding with a comeback win over SIU Carbondale (21-25, 29-27, 15-10) to open bracket play. WashU closed out the tournament with a loss to Missouri B (28-26, 25-16) in the semifinal. 

Women's Ultimate

The WashU women's ultimate team (WUWU) competed in the Queen City Tune Up on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4-5 in Charlotte, N.C. WUWU went 2-5 in the tournament, finishing 14th out of 20 teams. WashU went 1-3 in pool play with a win over North Carolina State (10-8) and losses to Georgia tech (10-2), Virginia (13-1) and Notre Dame (12-5). WUWU opened bracket play with a 15-6 loss to Carleton College before rebounding with a 9-8 win over Wisconsin. WashU fell to UNC-Wilmington 11-6 in the 13th-place match.
