Scheduled to open on October 29, 2016, the Gary M. Sumers Recreation Center will revitalize the southwest corner of the Danforth Campus, giving the Washington University community a modern and dynamic space to congregate and engage in recreational pursuits. The new state-of- the-art fitness and recreation facilities will enhance efforts to encourage the WashU community to develop healthy lifestyles and lifelong habits.
The Sumers Rec project included a complete 36,000-square-foot interior rejuvenation of historic Francis Gymnasium, site of the 1904 Olympics, as well as a 66,500-square-foot addition to the south side of Francis Gymnasium and an additional 20,000 square feet of improvements to the existing Athletics Complex.
Sumers is an innovative and inclusive facility that will be outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment that provides and individualized experience. Programming at Sumers Rec will promote and encourage healthy lifestyles, physical fitness, emotional and social well-being, leadership, and athletic performance.The Sumers Recreation Center is also a place to recharge with furnished relaxation space, massage therapy, and a health promotion suite. With dedicated small group seating and lounge areas, the center will serve as a magnet for social connections and community gathering on the WashU campus.
